Sales and Raffles

Each Year circa a week or two before Easter, The Friends hold a Fundraising Sale in the Hospital. There is a wide variety of stalls ranging from home baking, gifts, bric a brac, household linens, books, fruit vegetables, jewellery, pictures etc. available.   The sale not only provides a much needed income for the Friends but it provides an opportunity for the residents and patients to do some shopping in the company of their family and friends and when all the selections have been made the  satisfied customers can repair to the Coffee Shop for a well earned cuppa and refreshments.

The Friends hold their largest Sale in the Hospital in November.   The range of stalls is similar to those available at the Easter Sale with the addition of a toy stall, a wonderful display of Christmas fare including homemade Christmas Cakes, Christmas Cards, Calendars, wrapping and Christmas Decorations.  It is one of the major fundraising events in the Friends’ calendar and also provides a great opportunity for the residents and staff to do their Christmas Shopping at very competitive prices.   Some interesting items of bric a brac are always available for the Collector.  There is, of course, the social element of this event as the attractive Coffee Shop provides an ideal setting for friends to meet and exchange Seasons Greetings. A major Raffle and tickets are distributed in the weeks leading up to the Christmas Sale.  They are also sold during the Sale and as the sale concludes, a “Celebrity” is invited along to draw the winning tickets.

Charity Bridge Evening

The RDS Bridge Club organise an Annual Gala Charity Bridge Evening in aid of The Royal Hospital Donnybrook.    They normally cater for circa 50 tables with separate sections for Seniors, A Players, Intermediate B Players and Novices.    First and Second Prizes for North/South and East/West are awarded in each Section.   It is an “open night” and tickets may be purchased in advance from The Friends’ Office, Phone 01 497 1921.   If tickets have not been purchased in advance, it is advisable to come in good time in order to secure a table.   This is always a thoroughly enjoyable evening and one not to be missed. Free car parking is available on the night. Volunteers are always welcome to help with the preparations on the day.

Once again there was great support on the evening with two hundred people in attendance. The amount raised was €6,685 and will be used by the hospital to purchase two “Functional Electrical Stimulators” which they require. A pre-bridge supper was available in the Thomas Prior Room of the RDS commencing at 5.30 p.m. and this allowed members and guests who wished to come along early and enjoy a glass of wine and meal thus making for a very sociable start to the evening. Congratulations to Mary McCarthy, President of the RDS Bridge Club, her very hard-working committee and the members for achieving such a great result. A sincere word of thanks must also go to those who donated prizes for the raffle. Subsequent to the Charity Night, The Friends of The Royal Hospital Donnybrook were indeed saddened to learn of the death of the RDS Bridge Tournament Director, Paul O’Reilly and offer their sincere condolences to his wife Liz-Anne and family. For the past number of years Paul has acted as Tournament Director for the Charity Night and has always given his services free of charge. May he rest in peace.
